Case Victory: Manuela B.H. (Defeating the ICE “Trap”)

Manuela, an asylum seeker from Colombia living in Bakersfield, California, had been a model immigrant since her arrival in March 2022. For over three and a half years, she resided stably with her sponsor, worked legally under a valid EAD, and complied perfectly with every check-in and electronic monitoring requirement.

On December 14, 2025, a freak accident occurred. While doing household cleaning, Manuela tried to lift a heavy bed frame to clean underneath it. Her wrist monitor became ensnared in the frame. Because the frame was too heavy to lift further, the band was forcibly ripped.

Showing total honesty and the ultimate proof that she was not a flight risk, Manuela and her sponsor went straight to the ICE office the very next morning to report the accident. While an ICE staff member claimed the damage was intentional, an older male official accurately observed that the break was crooked and jagged—not clean-cut like intentional tampering. They issued her a replacement and sent her home.

But two weeks later, ICE orchestrated a cruel trap. They contacted Manuela and told her to report back to the office to have the monitor replaced with a phone application. When she arrived on December 29, 2025, relying on that representation, she was pinned against a wall, arrested, and thrown into the California City ICE Processing Center on federal charges of "Destruction of Federal Property."

While in custody, the case escalated from a legal nightmare into a literal fight for her life. Manuela suffered a catastrophic medical decline, experiencing consistent fainting spells and requiring IV fluids every 1–2 days just to remain stable. Her immune system was severely compromised, and she contracted a dangerous bacterial stomach infection. Shockingly, the facility doctor confirmed her health was "very fragile," yet ICE stonewalled our team and refused to release her primary medical records, using her medical isolation to push through a removal order on March 30, 2026, while she was too weak to gather evidence to defend herself.
